Anne and Matt had a creative, personal wedding at Spill the Wine in Minneapolis. These two have been together for over 10 years and because of that, have a very closely knit group of friends and family. Anne is deeply kind, warm and appreciative and Matt is grounded, hilarious and very passionate about music. Together they make a really great couple who seem to balance each other out. The wedding day was full of love, one hell of a dance party, great food and hilarious and heartfelt speeches. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Hearten Magazine Feature!

I am honored to be featured in the most recent issue of Hearten Magazine, an online inspiration guide for couples planning weddings in Minnesota. I had a chance to dig into my Scandinavian roots for this shoot at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis. I wanted to do a modern take on traditional Scandinavian traditions and styles, with a variety of styles of bridesmaids dresses from Flutter Boutique, gorgeous flowers by Flora Bella, Munster Rose and Distinctly Debbie and possibly the cutest wedding dress I’ve ever seen also from Flutter. I mean, just look at that lace detail! And I love the short length. I love collaborating with other artists on a creative shoot like this. Each person added so much to the style and outcome of the images. I will be sharing more photos from this fun shoot later this week.

I love burlesque. When I discovered it a few years ago, I was hooked. It’s an incredible art form with some of the most vivacious, funny, talented performers I’ve ever met. I have great respect for any artist who devotes their time and energy to what they are passionate about, especially when there is little financial reward. I knew that I wanted to photograph Miss Victoria DeVille the first time I saw her perform at The Best of Midwest Burlesk Festival this year. I shared one image a few weeks ago from our shoot together and just downloaded the film I shot and had to share these four. If you haven’t seen a burlesque show or have and want more, check out Black Hearts Burlesque in the Twin Cities. You will not be disappointed!

Etsy for Inspiration

I am always looking for inspiration, it’s just part of who I am as an artist and a person. I discovered the Etsy Handmade Portraits a few years ago and was hooked. They are short films about an artist, their process and their life and every single one I have watched leaves me smiling and dreaming. I have always loved going into people’s spaces and seeing how they live and with creatives, it’s even more fun because I get to see how their tools are organized, what containers they use, what their handwriting looks like on the little notes they leave for themselves…all those little details that shape their creative life. I just love that. I just watched this video and love how Sophie Blackall takes inspiration from her daily life in New York. The portraits that she made of people on the subway are so playful, thoughtful and connected. It makes sense that she illustrates children’s books after seeing these pieces. For those of you who are looking for a little peek into someone else’s artistic process…enjoy. I know I did.

The lovely Dahlia Dulce graced my studio today with such elegance, mystery and beauty. She is a performer with Black Hearts Burlesque in the Twin Cities. I love how vibrant the burlesque community is here and am so glad I get to photograph so many ridiculously talented people. Definitely check out a show if you’re in town, you won’t regret it.

Switch the Boi Wonder

Today I photographed the incredible Switch the Boi Wonder a.k.a. Mea. She is a burlesque performer and drag king in the Twin Cities and if you haven’t seen her perform, you really should. She is enigmatic and charming, kind and gracious and deeply talented.

I had so much fun photographing this family at my studio last week. Cash was a little shy when they came in the door but it only took him about 3 minutes to warm up. He was so funny and playful, which is my favorite thing about working with kids his age – they just want to have fun. Little baby Hayward was so sweet, with his huge brown eyes looking right at me. Annie and Malachi have such a great connection with their kids and love to play with them-that’s the trick to getting great family pictures – be yourselves. Goof around with each other, read books, tickle, talk in silly voices, pretend and give each other hugs and kisses…that’s when the genuine laughs and the sweet cuddles happen that I love to capture. Those are the photos you’re going to want to have as your kids grow up. What never works is telling a young child to look at the camera and smile (especially two year olds!). Everyone ends up frustrated because they aren’t doing what you want them to do. Instead, I encourage all of my clients to just be comfortable and real with their kids. It works every time.
